Understanding Azure's Pricing Options and Creating Custom Pricing Plans
Most customers migrating to Azure already have purchased Microsoft Licenses and need to reflect this cost reduction in their results. Whether you already have licenses, are a Hybrid benefits member or would like to see what your results would look like with a 1 or 3 year Reserved Instance applied to a machine; you will be able to create custom designs in our Designer to plan your cloud migration.
Microsoft BYOL SQL to Azure (Bring Your Own License)
Microsoft now allows existing customers to bring their SQL server licenses to run on Azure. The program only supports Microsoft Enterprise Agreement customers.
Azure Pricing Plan Options
- Use Hybrid Benefits and BYO MSSQL License.
- Assume BYO MSSQL License.
At a glance
- The Designer now features the Use Hybrid Benefits and BYO MSSQL License program which accommodates existing Windows Server and MSSQL Enterprise licensing in Azure.
- The Assume BYO MSSQL option provides a discount for existing MSSQL licenses on the cloud.
Existing Microsoft Enterprise Agreement customers can now provision existing licensing to both Windows Server and MSSQL to Azure. Certain stipulations are included in the program which all Microsoft clients must abide by to repurpose the license.
Azure Hybrid Benefits : Enables customers to scale up quickly to Azure cloud technology. It allows payment and deployment options which permit moving workloads in stages or for the migration of entire data centers.
Do Not Use Hybrid Benefits: Excludes the use of Hybrid Benefits in your Design
Use Hybrid Benefits Only if MSSQL is Not Used: Includes existing Windows Hybrid licensing where MSSQL license is not utilized
Use Hybrid Benefits And BYO MSSQL License if Needed: Uses existing Windows Server and MSSQL licenses for pricing discounts. As stated above, these discounts are applied to Azure vM environments and Window environments. Restrictions and license exclusions apply depending on the Microsoft Enterprise Agreement.
Use Azure MSSQL VM Platform: Uses existing licenses and applies discounts to the Azure vm platform.
Assume BYO MSSQL License: Applies the existing MSSQL Windows license to the cloud on a non-vm cloud instance.
Designer Pricing Plan for Hybrid Benefits and Azure
- Azure Hybrid for Windows allows you to bring your "on-prem" licenses to the Azure reducing cost; the ability to deploy application in phases; spin your instance to an optimal Azure Windows vM.
- The Hybrid Benefits menu permits selecting only Windows Server in Azure.
- Hybrid Benefits can be selected in conjunction with BYO MSSQL Licensing maximizing cost savings within the Cloudamize Designer.
Designer Pricing Plan for Hybrid Benefits and Azure
- The Designer Pricing Plan allows you to deploy your current "on-prem" MSSQL license exclusively to an Azure vM Platform.
- Alternatively, you can select BYO MSSQL (Bring Your Own Microsoft SQL License to a non-vm Azure instance.)
- Enterprise Agreement subscriptions are required in order to participate in the program. Microsoft customers can access additional information in their portal (which is now available in the Cloudamize platform).
Create a Custom Pricing Design
If you need to create a pricing plan for an Azure migration that reflects Reserved Instances, Azure Hybrid Benefits or BYOL options, you can do so by creating a custom design in our Designer feature.
Select the Designer from within the assessment that you are working in.
Select the "Pricing Plan" drop down on the right hand side to display various pricing options that you can select to create a custom pricing plan. When you have selected the pricing plan options you require and are ready to build the design, click the "Build Design" button on the the bottom right hand side of the page.
The Design will require some time to be built, you can check the status by selecting the drop-down on the right hand side of the "All Infrastructure" home screen. Once it has completed you can now select the design to see the updated cost breakdown.
Customize Compute Options
You can customize options relating to the compute recommendations for your infrastructure. You can either select CPU and Instance Family or the Instance Type.
CPU and Instance Family
Select the option for CPU and Instance family to adjust the target peak CPU threshold (Service Level Target) and to select which instance families can be recommended. Get started by selecting CPU and Instance Family:
You can then adjust the Target Peak CPU Threshold by moving the slider to select a value between 1% and 99%.
Check the boxes next to each Instance Family which you would like to receive recommendations for.
Select the option for Instance Type to force the selected machine or infrastructure to a specific instance type. After selecting this option, click the drop-down list to view instance types available in the region you have selected under pricing plan options:
Customize Storage Options
You can customize the storage IOPS scale, types of storage choices, and limit the maximum number of disks recommended for each type of storage.
You can scale your observed IOPS for the selected machine or infrastructure by adjusting the slider at the top of the Storage Tuning controls. You can apply a percentage of your IOPS to consider for storage recommendations from 0% (meaning ignore all IOPS) to 500% (meaning assume 500% of the observed IOPS). This can be useful for adjusting the Cloudamize recommendations for certain situations which are known about your infrastructure internally.
Select Storage Types
You can select the types of storage offered by the cloud provider for which you would like recommendations. Simply check the options you would like to have recommended:
Select Number of Disk Limits
You can limit the number of disks recommended for each type of storage by selecting the maximum number of disks in from the associated drop-down list. Select "Unlimited" for cases where the limit should not be considered.
Adjust Network Scale
You can customize the network load factor by adjusting the slider under the Network Tuning portion of the Designer controls. You can select a network load factor between 0% (meaning network load will not be considered) to 500% (meaning assume 5 times the amount of network load).
