SQL Telemetry Setup Guide

This guide offers instructions for using the SQL Server Telemetry data collector, a command-line utility that gathers specific telemetry information. This data is crucial for accurate assessments and optimizing SQL Server licensing.

Overview

The SQL Server Telemetry data collector is a command-line interface (CLI) utility designed to gather specific SQL Server performance and configuration details not accessible through standard agent or agentless data collection methods. After running the utility, the collected data is stored in a file that you must upload manually to the Cloudomize portal.

Data Collection & Purpose

  • Data Collected: The tool gathers detailed SQL Server telemetry information.

  • Purpose: This data drives the optimization of SQL Server licensing, providing a deeper level of insight for your assessment.

  • Method: The utility can be run on a system to collect data for one or multiple SQL Servers.

  • Result: A file is created containing the collected telemetry data.

Installation & Usage

To get started, you must download the correct installer for your operating system.

  1. Navigate to the SQL Telemetry tab: In the Cloudomize portal, go to Discover > Setup and select the SQL Telemetry tab.

  2. Select Your Operating System:

    • For Linux, click the Linux tab.

    • Click the link "Download the SQL Server Telemetry Linux Installer" to download the file for Linux.

    • For Windows, click the Windows tab.

    • Click the link "Download the SQL Server Telemetry Windows Installer" to download the file for Windows.

  3. Run the Utility: After downloading, execute the SQL Server Telemetry utility from the command line.

  4. Upload the Data: Once the utility has created the output file, you must upload it to the Cloudamize portal via the External Data section, located under Discover > Setup.
